About the artist...
Duane is a stone sculptor, working in calcite, marble, alabaster and many other types of stone. He works from his outdoor studio at Art City in Ventura.
His work is shaped by a combination of education, events and artistic influences. He has an engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati. A law degree from Ventura College of Law and studied art at Ventura College. After six years as an engineer and 34 years as a Public Defender, he has retired to more fully pursue his passion for sculpture. He has been sculpting stone for over 30 years.
Duane’s work is primarily abstract, with shapes and voids highlighting the story each unique stone has to tell. Pieces often show the influence of geometric shapes, organic and fluid forms, clean lines and sensuous curves. Making stone, which is hard and rigid, look soft and flexible is often a goal. Without a single overarching style to his work, Duane allows each stone to lead him to the finished piece.
